Discover Gram & Dun

Right in the heart of the Country Club Plaza at 600 Ward Pkwy, Kansas City, MO 64112, United States, Gram & Dun feels like the kind of place you stumble into once-and then keep coming back to. I’ve visited a handful of times over the past year, both for relaxed weekend brunch and weekday dinners with colleagues, and each visit has offered something slightly different while keeping the same steady quality.

The first thing you notice is the atmosphere. The dining room blends rustic wood textures with modern lighting, and when the patio is open, it’s easily one of the most comfortable outdoor spots in Kansas City. During my last visit, we sat outside just before sunset. The service team moved effortlessly between tables, refilling drinks and offering thoughtful menu suggestions without hovering. That balance is harder to find than most people think.

The menu leans heavily into seasonal American cuisine, with a clear farm-to-table philosophy. According to the National Restaurant Association, diners increasingly prefer locally sourced ingredients and transparent supply chains, and Gram & Dun clearly follows that trend. You can taste it in the freshness of the produce and the depth of flavor in the proteins. One standout for me has been the smoked pork chop-thick, tender, and layered with a subtle sweetness that doesn’t overpower the natural smokiness. It’s plated with seasonal vegetables that actually taste like they were picked recently, not shipped across the country weeks ago.

Brunch here deserves special mention. On a Sunday morning, the place fills quickly, which tells you a lot about its reputation among locals. I ordered the shrimp and grits, and what impressed me most was the balance. The grits were creamy without being heavy, and the shrimp had a clean, briny snap. My friend opted for the brioche French toast, topped with fresh berries and house-made syrup. It wasn’t overly sweet, which made it feel more refined than your average diner-style brunch plate.

From a professional perspective-having worked in hospitality during college-I pay attention to systems: timing between courses, temperature control, and communication among staff. Here, dishes arrive hot and well-paced. On one particularly busy Friday night, our appetizers came out within ten minutes, and the entrées followed without any awkward gap. That kind of consistency usually indicates strong kitchen leadership and solid training processes.

Reviews across platforms consistently highlight the restaurant’s curated cocktail list. The bartenders clearly understand balance and technique. I once asked about their house bourbon selection, and the bartender explained the aging notes and mash bill differences in a way that felt educational rather than pretentious. Organizations like the James Beard Foundation often emphasize beverage programs as a marker of a restaurant’s sophistication, and while Gram & Dun isn’t flaunting awards, the attention to detail is obvious.

Another strength is portion control. The plates are generous but not excessive, which aligns with current dining trends toward quality over quantity. The presentation is polished but not fussy. You won’t find unnecessary foam or overcomplicated garnishes-just thoughtfully composed dishes that let ingredients shine.

Of course, no place is perfect. On one visit during peak holiday season, the wait time stretched longer than expected despite a reservation. However, the host was transparent about the delay and offered updates, which goes a long way in maintaining trust. In my experience, how a restaurant handles small hiccups often says more than a flawless night ever could.

The location in the Plaza district also makes it convenient for both locals and visitors exploring Kansas City. Parking can be competitive during busy hours, so planning ahead helps. Still, the energy of the surrounding area adds to the overall dining experience, especially if you’re making an evening of it.

If you’re scanning menus in the area and reading through reviews, this is one spot that consistently delivers on flavor, ambiance, and service. Whether you’re meeting friends for brunch, hosting out-of-town guests, or simply craving a well-crafted American meal, Gram & Dun manages to feel approachable while maintaining a level of polish that keeps it a step above the ordinary.

  • Hands down the BEST shrimp and grits I’ve EVER had and I’ve had a ton. Not only am I from Atlanta where shrimp and grits is a thing and brunch is an experience, this is by far the BEST and it’s not even close!! The sauce is sort of tangy and spicy (I don’t like spice), but I sucked it up because our server raved about it. Also, my picture doesn’t do any justice! We also had the breakfast potatoes which we cooked to perfection and my friend had the kale salad - SUPER FRESH, seasoned well and delicious. GO HERE IF YOU HAVENT!! And make a reservation.

  • We were invited by the manager to come in for a meal and after just a few bites, my husband and I began planning our next date night to revisit. The service was top tier, food was delicious and fast. Fresh. Our server was so kind and sweet, and even made a VERY welcomed food suggestion (fried jalapenos with the spinach artichoke dip, to die for). I cannot say enough positive things. I cannot wait to return. Thank you for a memorable first anniversary meal.

  • Such a great brunch spot in Kansas City! They have a good selection of entrees for both meat eaters and vegetarians. I highly recommend the chicken and waffles! The waffle is so fluffy and cooked to perfection. Their Hugo Spritz is also a MUST try if you’re in to drinks with your brunch. It was so good, ordered two! The service was great and the atmosphere in the restaurant is cute and cozy.

  • Sunlight and space set the mood at Gram & Dun, where the dining room feels calm, modern, and quietly inviting. Located on the Country Club Plaza, the restaurant balances polish with comfort, offering a setting that encourages you to settle in rather than rush through a meal. The fried blackened catfish is the clearest expression of the kitchen’s strengths. The fillet arrives generously sized, its crust crisp and well seasoned, delivering warmth and spice without overwhelming the fish itself. Inside, the catfish remains moist and flaky, cooked with care and restraint. A creamy sauce adds richness, while a charred lemon brings brightness and balance, keeping the dish grounded and focused. Everything on the plate feels intentional. Garnishes are there for flavor, not decoration, and the interplay between spice, acidity, and richness is well judged. It is satisfying food that does not try to prove a point. Cocktails follow the same philosophy. They are fresh, balanced, and easy to enjoy, complementing the meal rather than competing with it. The room, filled with natural light, wood tones, and greenery, reinforces that sense of ease. Gram & Dun succeeds by knowing exactly what it is. It offers familiar flavors, carefully refined, in a space that feels welcoming rather than staged. In a neighborhood defined by elegance, it delivers something simpler and more enduring: a comfortable room, confident cooking, and food that invites you back without insisting on attention.

  • We come here almost every time we visit KC, and almost always for Brunch on Sunday before we head home. So good. The food, beverages, and always excellent service! PS, make sure to get the fresh fruit. So good.

  • Perfect place for our GNO dinner during our Christmas weekend at the plaza Great atmosphere and exceptional food choices. The Hanger Steak dinner was cooked perfectly, as well as the Brick Pressed Chicken. We met Stephen as he walked through checking on tables. He has some great stories to share! We'll be back!
